Adrian (pastels) -
1979
Wax crayon and
watercolour on newsprint paper - 594mm x 840mm
A whole series of paintings
and prints was developed from an original
sketch - 'Adrian (original sketch)'.
Boat on the Beach -
1980
Wax crayon and
watercolour on paper - 594mm x 840mm
Based on the sketch 'Boat
and Pier' drawn on Brighton Beach looking towards the Palace Pier.
Gardner Centre (pink sky)
- 1980
Wax crayon and
watercolour on pink paper - 594mm x 720mm
Most of the paintings of this
period were based on actual sketches rather than photographs, unlike the later
acrylic paintings. Unusually,
this version leaves the pink colour of the paper showing in the background.
Liz (primary
colours) -
1980
Wax crayon and
watercolour on newsprint paper - 594mm x 840mm
This painted life drawing is
part of a series based on an original sketch: 'Liz
(sketch)'. The origins of this technique of painting can be seen in 'Girl
on Chair'.
Study for Marine Parade Steps
- 1981
Watercolour
on paper - 840mm x 594mm
The acrylic painting 'Marine
Parade Steps' was based on this watercolour, which itself was one of the
first paintings to stem from a series of photographs.
Sky, Sea, Sand -
1980
Wax crayon and
watercolour on paper - 594mm x 840mm
This was a study to attempt
to represent the sky, the sea and the beach with the use of the bare minimum
of three bands of colour.
Still Life (hidden) -
1979
Wax crayon and
watercolour on red paper - 594mm x 840mm
Various objects were carefully
positioned and then covered by cloths to create this effect.
Sussex
University (pastels) -
1981
Watercolour
on paper - 840mm x 594mm
With this painting it is possible
to see a style emerging which is evident in the later acrylic
paintings.
Sussex University (pond)
- 1980
Wax crayon and
watercolour on paper - 840mm x 594mm
Unlike later scenes of Sussex
University Buildings, this painting was developed from an original sketch
instead of from a photograph.
Sussex University Steps -
1980
Wax crayon and
watercolour on paper - 594mm x 890mm
The digital painting 'Sussex
Uni 05 detail' was based on a sketch from this same series.
View Between Two Buildings
- 1980
Wax crayon and
watercolour on paper - 594mm x 840mm
See the colour photograph 'Chichester
Lecture Theatre' for another view of this unusual building.
THE paintings and sketches dating from 1979 to 1981 in this section give an insight into the developing style that was to finally emerge in the acrylic paintings of 1982 and 1983.
The use of black lines
containing areas of colour has been likened to the paintings of Patrick
Caulfield and to a certain degree Valerio Adami.
The most recent paintings though are pure watercolours.

View Between Buildings -
1981
Watercolour
on paper - 840mm x 594mm
This is a view looking down
the steps beside the Chichester Lecture Theatre at Sussex University, Falmer,
East Sussex.
Torre del Mar Harbour -
2002
Pencil and watercolour
paint on paper - 280mm x 380mm
Not far from Malaga in southern
Spain is the town of Torre del Mar with its busy harbour. This painting actually
focuses on the ripples and reflections in the water rather than the fishing
boats themselves.
Benagalbón Plaza -
2002
Pencil and watercolour
paint on paper - 380mm x 280mm
This is a view from the plaza
(square) looking across some steps that link a small bar to the main street
below. Despite the hot and dry climate, there is an abundance of trees, flowers
and shrubs that help to create picturesque scenes.
Back Street in Filigriana
- 2002
Pencil and watercolour
paint on paper - 280mm x 380mm
Unlike the other three watercolour
paintings in this series, this one was painted from a photograph instead of
being painted 'en plein air' on site. Some of the streets here are too narrow
for an easel to stand and restrict access for a couple of hours.
Back Street in Benagalbón
- 2002
Pencil and watercolour
paint on paper - 380mm x 280mm
Benagalbón is one of the many
'pueblos blancos' (white towns) in the Andalucian district of Spain. Almost
every building is decorated with a stunning array of flowers which provides
a colourful contrast to the plain whitewashed walls.
