View Between Buildings

View Between Two Buildings - 1980
Wax crayon and watercolour on paper - 594mm x 840mm
See the colour photograph 'Chichester Lecture Theatre' for another view of this unusual building.

THE paintings and sketches dating from 1979 to 1981 in this section give an insight into the developing style that was to finally emerge in the acrylic paintings of 1982 and 1983.

The use of black lines containing areas of colour has been likened to the paintings of Patrick Caulfield and to a certain degree Valerio Adami.

The most recent paintings though are pure watercolours.

Benagalbon Plaza

Torre del Mar Harbour - 2002
Pencil and watercolour paint on paper - 280mm x 380mm
Not far from Malaga in southern Spain is the town of Torre del Mar with its busy harbour. This painting actually focuses on the ripples and reflections in the water rather than the fishing boats themselves.

Back Street in Filigriana

Benagalbón Plaza - 2002
Pencil and watercolour paint on paper - 380mm x 280mm
This is a view from the plaza (square) looking across some steps that link a small bar to the main street below. Despite the hot and dry climate, there is an abundance of trees, flowers and shrubs that help to create picturesque scenes.

Back Street in Filigriana - 2002
Pencil and watercolour paint on paper - 280mm x 380mm
Unlike the other three watercolour paintings in this series, this one was painted from a photograph instead of being painted 'en plein air' on site. Some of the streets here are too narrow for an easel to stand and restrict access for a couple of hours.

Back Street in Benagalbón - 2002
Pencil and watercolour paint on paper - 380mm x 280mm
Benagalbón is one of the many 'pueblos blancos' (white towns) in the Andalucian district of Spain. Almost every building is decorated with a stunning array of flowers which provides a colourful contrast to the plain whitewashed walls.
