This is one of the first paintings to be created from a photograph and subsequent sketch. The image was enlarged using the traditional method of overlaying a grid (see the sketch 'Procession with Brass Band'), then transferring each square onto a larger sheet of paper or canvas.
This laborious technique was later replaced by projecting the photograph directly onto the canvas and tracing the image with a pencil - far quicker and more accurate. Aah, the wonders of technology!
