2002
Pencil on paper
- 280mm x 380mm

town on the west coast of Majorca, one of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean
Sea.
Boots Building, Brighton
- 4.8.81
Pencil on paper
- 420mm x 297mm
Based on an original photograph,
this is a good example of how architectural forms are simplified to an absolute
minimum.
Church & Road Signs -
4.8.81
Pencil on paper
- 297mm x 420mm
Unusually this sketch includes
a lot of details which would otherwise be omitted. See the digital painting
Church and Road Signs.

84
Pencil on paper
- 250mm x 205mm
This life drawing was later
transformed into a digital painting - see Reclining
Nude. More sketches like this can also be seen here.
Madeira Drive -
16.7.81
Pencil on paper
- 297mm x 420mm

provide the only detail in this sketch. Following this thumbnail link you
can see two more sketches in this very minimalistic style.

1980
Pencil on paper
- 563mm x 762mm
Several prints and paintings
were developed from this sketch.
Take a look at the Prints
and Wax
& Watercoloursections
for various examples.
Parked Cars -
3.8.81
Pencil on paper
- 297mm x 420mm
The inclusion of the parked
cars adds to the illusion of depth and eliminates some of the ambiguity implicated
by this method of drawing.
Church -
20.7.81
Pencil on paper
- 420mm x 297mm
This church is the one featured
in Church
& Road Signs and a
section of this sketch was used to create the painting Church
detail.
MOST of these sketches are based on original photographs. With the exception of 'Adrian' and 'Nude', these are preliminary drawings intended as preparatory studies for paintings.
Despite a certain amount
of ambiguity and the absence of depth caused by the lack of colour and subsequent
variations in tone, there remains a sense of perspective within the two-dimensional
line drawings.

4.4.82
Pencil and ink
on paper - 420mm x 297mm

few that have been developed into an acrylic painting (although not shown

the same series can be seen by clicking on this thumbnail.
St Bartholomew's -
26.7.81
Pencil and ink
on paper - 243mm x 183mm
A rare example of a 'working'
sketch illustrating the use of superimposed annotation. This method of recording
important colour information was used until photography replaced it.

- 420mm x 297mm

is based on a sketch from the same series.

- 7.1.83
Pencil on paper
- 420mm x 297mm

Gardner Arts Centre at the University of Sussex, the trees in the background
combined with the cylindrical architectural forms help to balance the whole
composition.
Fishing Boats in Soller Harbour
- 2002
Pencil on paper
280mm x 380mm
