Several life drawings were made during this period, but on this occasion there was no nude model available, so one of the students posed instead.

The sketch was then painted as a study with the intention of creating a larger painting from part of it.

This became the technique that was used in several paintings at this time (e.g.‘Motorbike’) and was developed considerably over the next three years.
