This is one of just a handful of sketches contained within two small sketch books.

Although drawn quite freely, there is a lot of attention to detail. The life drawings of this time were very much like this, in stark contrast to later sketches that leave out most of the detail.

It is important to note that this was drawn when the artist was sixteen years old, well before any personally-recognisable style had evolved or become apparent.
