All of Mark Reeves’ paintings prior to this one were on board (or paper in the case of preliminary sketches) as opposed to canvas. It was due to the advice of artist Peter Hawes at Brighton Polytechnic (now Brighton University) that this major change occurred.
The photograph ‘Steps’ was projected onto the canvas, whereby an outline was sketched in pencil and then painted.
This technique was used for all the canvas paintings.
