National Theatre - 1983
Liquitex on canvas
1268mm x 762mm

One of the most ‘abstract’ paintings of this period, it is based on a photograph taken from inside the foyer of The National Theatre in London.

This  building inspired many photographs but only a few paintings were made; perhaps the concrete structures and their coarse woodgrain-embossed textures are portrayed better in black and white photographs.

Certainly the majority of Mark Reeves’ paintings involves the use of bold and often exaggerated colours - indeed there are only four known paintings, all based on scenes from London’s South Bank Complex (e.g. ‘Hayward Gallery’) which consist predominantly of grey tones.
