South Bank Steps -
1981
Liquitex on
canvas 1052mm x 752mm
The architecture of the South
Bank Complex in London has inspired many photographs (see ‘Steps’)
and subsequently several sketches and paintings.
Gardner Centre Entrance -
1981
Liquitex on
canvas 1066mm x 742mm
This painting is the first of
many derived from photographs and sketches (see ‘Gardner
Centre 05’) of this unusual building situated on the campus of The University
of Sussex in Falmer.
Hayward Gallery -
1982
Liquitex on
canvas 916mm x 1218mm
The Hayward Gallery is one of
the buildings that make up London’s South Bank Complex. The black and white
photograph ‘Hayward Gallery
1’ shows a similar view.
Chemistry Building -
1981
Liquitex on
canvas 862mm x 1239mm
One of several images based
on the unique architectural forms at The University of Sussex in Falmer, designed
by Sir Basil Spence in the 1960s. See also ‘Chichester
Lecture Theatre’ from a series of colour photographs.
National Theatre -
1982
Liquitex on
canvas 1268mm x 762mm
The most common views of this
building are from the outside, however this painting is based on a photograph
taken inside the foyer looking outside. See the black & white photograph
'Foyer Window'.
Marine Parade Steps -
1982
Liquitex on
canvas 1265mm x 762mm
Although architectural forms
dominate the paintings of this period, the ornate Victorian railings along
Brighton’s seafront form the subject matter here. See also the photograph
‘Seafront’ and the digital painting
‘Elderly Couple
on Brighton Prom’.
Gardner Centre Rear View
- 1982
Liquitex on
canvas 759mm x 1266mm
This scene lends itself naturally
to being painted in this abstract way. See ‘Gardner
Centre (Back)’ which is the actual photograph that was used to make this
painting.
Blanket on Armchair -
1982
Liquitex on
canvas 1164mm x 762mm
This painting marks a move away
from rectilinear forms and comes from a series of sketches and photographs
of interior scenes. The photograph ‘Blanket’
is from this same period.
Corner of Bedroom -
1982
Liquitex on
canvas 709mm x 1145mm
Despite coming from the same
series of sketches as ‘Blanket on Armchair’,
this painting has closer links with earlier works. See also the photograph
‘Corner of Room’.
Gardner Centre Side View
-
1983
Liquitex on
canvas 247mm x 349mm
For compositional reasons this
painting is actually a mirror image of the original photograph and sketch.
It was also the first one to be painted on a smaller scale and not on canvas.
More of the sketches from this series of photographs will be published soon.
ALL of these paintings were created using ‘Liquitex’ acrylic paint on canvas except for the last one in the series which is on ‘Daler’ board.
You can see a larger version of each painting by clicking on the thumbnails.
There are two paintings
from this period not shown here: ‘National Theatre Steps’ and ‘Sussex University
Arches’ (based on the photograph ‘Arches’),
which are both in private collections.
